O'Bryant Graduate Honored with National Hispanic Heritage Youth Award
Massiel de los Santos, 2009 graduate of the John D. O’Bryant School of Math and Science and a resident of Boston’s South End, was honored earlier this month during the 12th Annual National Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards Ceremony held in Miami, Florida.
Ms. de los Santos was among nine awardees selected from a pool of more than 10,000 worthy applicants. Each of the honorees will receive $8,000 in educational grants, a laptop computer and a trip to Washington, D.C., where they will be recognized onstage at the star-studded 22nd Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards on September 30.“Ms. de los Santos is an example for her peers and all of us. Her hard work, dedication and energy have helped her achieve accomplishments we can all be proud of,” said Superintendent Carol R. Johnson.
“Massiel brings a contagious effervescence to a classroom which combines with an innate curiosity and a desire to learn. But Massiel is also interested in the success of those whose paths intersect with hers,” said O’Bryant School teacher Christine Langhoff.
Ms. de los Santos will spend the summer months volunteering at Rosie’s Place, a shelter for poor and homeless women in the South End. She will also volunteer at various Red Cross blood drives.
Ms. de los Santos plans to attend Smith College in the fall to study Economics and Latin American Studies.
