Student-Athlete GPA Requirements

Minimum GPA for participation in athletics is 2.0

Objective – The John D. O’Bryant School athletic program will provide the structure and support to enable all student-athletes to reach their full potential and become leaders on the playing field and in their community. They will excel in high school and attend the college of their choice upon graduation.

Rational – Current GPA requirements allow some student athletes to graduate with GPAs lower than 2.0. With a minimum GPA at state colleges of 2.0, the low GPA limits college choices to community colleges, restricting the college and career choices of many student-athletes. By raising the minimum GPA for student athletes and providing the support structure needed for student-athletes to maintain this standard, O’Bryant student-athletes will broaden their college and career options by using academics and athletics to support college acceptance and financial aid opportunities.

Guidelines –

• Minimum GPA will be 2.0 for 2010-2011 academic year
• GPA reporting will remain the same, end of term (exception year end grades for fall sports)
• Academic support (study halls, tutoring, SAT prep, etc) will be provided for student-athletes by coaches, teachers, academic coaches and partners supported by BSA
• Academic support programs will continue to expand through partnerships with Boston Scholar Athlete, university and community partners as well as school based programs
